DOG HEARING
DESCHUTES COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
October 4, 1989
Chair Prante opened the hearing at 11:40 a.m. Board members in
attendance were Dick Maudlin and Lois Bristow Prante. Rich Isham,
County Legal Counsel was also present.
Les Hamilton, Deputy Sheriff, testified that on September 25, 1989,
he was contacted by Charlene Pond regarding two dogs chasing her
sheep. He said that Ms. Pond was not present at the hearing nor
was the owner of the dog. Ms. Pond told him she had not counted
her sheep properly, and when she went back outside, her sheep
appeared traumatized. She noticed that one had some blood on it
and had been damaged. She observed dogs chasing sheep in her
pasture. She drove to the location. The brown and white dog
escaped, however the other dog came to her when she called. She
kept it in her vehicle until the following day when Officer
Hamilton and Officer Chilen arrived at her home. They took the dog
to the shelter. Officer Hamilton submitted pictures of the sheep
and the dog.
Rick Isham reported that he had just received a phone message that
the owner of the impounded dog was not going to contest, and
therefore the victim was not going to show up for the hearing.
MAUDLIN: I would move that the dog that has been detained be put
to death as humanely as possible.
PRANTE: Second.
