WHEREAS, in 1918, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tiptofi" 3naana
founded a Catholic Sisters' hospital and academy in Bend to!�Vravide
needed medical services and care to the young community of 5,000
residents; and
WHEREAS, the small hospital was soon dedicated as St. Charles
Hospital in recognition of Bishop Charles O'Reilly and has served
this community for seventy-five years through epidemics, natural
disasters, wars and medical breathroughs; and
WHEREAS, today, St. Charles serves the residents of Deschutes
County with consistent, high quality care and is now a Regional
Hospital serving the largest geographic service area in Oregon; and
WHEREAS, the assurance our citizens have that reliable, high-
quality medical care is available in times of needs is of paramount
importance in maintaining the livability of Deschutes County; now,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON, that we the Board of County Commissioners
do hereby proclaim the week June 27 through July 2, 1993, "St.
Charles Medical Center Week" in honor of the 75 Year Anniversary of
the Medical Center as the week set aside for recognition of the
caring service the staff, volunteers and founding Sisters have
provided our community.
