BEFORE THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON
A Resolution Proclaiming May 15
through 21, 1994 as "Bike Commute
Week" in Deschutes County, Oregon.
RESOLUTION NO. 94-040 0135-1541
WHEREAS, eighty-two percent of travel by Americans is by
private automobile; and
WHEREAS, automobiles emit forty-five percent of the nitrogen
oxide in our nation's air, and add more than 700 million tons of
carbon to the atmosphere annually; and
WHEREAS, bicycling is pollution -free transportation, helping
to keep the air clean and to conserve energy; and
WHEREAS, bicycling helps to alleviate traffic congestion and
parking shortages; and
WHEREAS, bicycling is a wholesome sport benefiting the health
of the citizens of Deschutes County; and
WHEREAS, a group of civic -minded organizations has planned an
event to promote an alternative to automobile commuting for
experienced and novice bicycle riders alike; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON, that the week of May 15 through 21, 1994
be designated "Bike Commute Week" in Deschutes County, Oregon; and
the Board urges the citizens of Deschutes County, Oregon, to join
Deschutes County employees and officials in engaging in a healthful
alternative to the use of the automobile by bicycling.
