Chair Nancy Pope Schlangen called the Board of County Commissioners
meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. County Commissioners present were
Nancy Pope Schlangen and Linda L. Swearingen. Also present was
Mike Maier, County Administrator; Meaghan Houska, Communications
Director; Greg Brown, Sheriff; Marty Wynne, Finance
Director/Treasurer; and Susan Mayea, Management Analyst.
1. CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL OF INCREASE IN BEGINNING NETWORKING
CAPITAL IN SHERIFF'S BUDGET
Before the Board was consideration of approval of an increase
in beginning networking capital in the Sheriff's budget.
Sheriff Greg Brown requested the Board to make a decision to
allow the Sheriff's office to continue for a while. He felt
this was doing the right thing for the citizens of Deschutes
County.
Sheriff Brown reported that his office had put aside some
spending and they had not filled 22 vacancies. The savings
from these conditions appears to be additional funds in the
amount of $225,000. When the Sheriff's office was at full
staff and everything fully operational, they spend
approximately $30,000 a day. Sheriff Brown proposed taking
the $225,000 and using additional funding of $150,000 to bring
back the laid -off employees.
Sheriff Brown stated he would work with the Finance Department
to determine what the dollar amount would need to be paid. He
recommended they take the $40,000 the City was willing to step
forward with and only go back to the City if necessary.
