A Resolution Declaring *

Awareness Month
RESOLUTION NO. 2000-068
WHEREAS, we in the United States of America have set a standard for
the entire world; we have enacted into law the AMERICANS WITH
DISABILITIES ACT (ADA), the most comprehensive civil rights legislation
in the world for people with disabilities. The ADA provides anti-
discrimination protection for our nation's more than 54 million disabled
citizens in public and private employment, public accommodations,
transportation and telecommunications. Through this Act we have proclaimed
to the world that United States citizens with disabilities are integral,
contributing, productive and valued citizens of our nation.
DESCHUTES COUNTY is committed to full compliance with the ADA.
THEREFORE, it is critical that Deschutes County proclaims its intention
to fully implement the ADA. We are increasingly becoming a global
economy, one in which we must compete with every nation on earth. We need
the talents, skills and abilities of every one of our citizens, including those with
disabilities. Persons with disabilities reflect the diversity of our country, creed
and national origin, and offer varied and multiple proficiencies and
competencies. We cannot afford, either morally or financially, to disregard the
valuable contributions people with disabilities bring, not only to our
workplaces but also to the mainstream of our communities; they are
irreplaceable resources for our nation.
THEREFORE, by joint resolution, the United States Congress has
designated the month of October of each year as NATIONAL DISABILITY
EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH. This provides the opportunity
for all United States citizens to recognize the tremendous value and potential
of people with disabilities, and an opportunity to recommit and dedicate
ourselves to the empowerment, employment and full inclusion of every one of
our citizens with a disability. Therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS FOR
DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON, as follows:
That October 2000 is hereby declared NATIONAL DISABILITY
EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH IN DESCHUTES COUNTY.
The Theme for 2000 is "ABILITY YOU CAN BANK ON". We call on all
citizens of Deschutes County to observe this month with appropriate programs
and activities that reaffirm our determination to fulfill both the letter and spirit
of the AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT.
DATED this 27th Day of September 2000.
