Deschutes National Forest, )
Land Management Plan )
WHEREAS, the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners has reviewed,
analyzed and evaluated the Deschutes National Forest, Land Management
Plan, Draft Environmental Impact Statement which will establish the
policies for the future planning, management direction and resource
utilization of the National Forest resources; and
WHEREAS, the Deschutes National Forest is the single largest and
most important economic resource within Deschutes County; and
WHEREAS, the management direction of the Deschutes National Forest
significantly effects the level of economic activity within Deschutes
County, County tax receipts and monetary receipts in lieu of tax payments;
WHEREAS, all of the Alternatives included in the Land Management
Plan, except Alternative I, will significantly reduce employment and pay-
rolls within Deschutes County and funds received by the Deschutes County
government from taxes and payments in lieu of taxes.
WHEREAS, Alternative I will permit continuation of the current annual
allowable timber harvest of 189 million board feet, provide the present
level of tax and other monetary receipts to the Deschutes County govern-
ment; and
WHEREAS, Alternative I will effectively support the tourism and
recreation industry within Deschutes County, will provide ample forage
for a 24,211 mule deer population and excellent opportunities for downhill
skiing, motorized recreation, hunting, fishing and boating.

WHEREAS, the majority of the 190,300 acres of forest land presently
designated as Roadless Areas on the Deschutes National Forest will be
redesignated for multiple use purposes, including timber production, forage,
general recreation and other uses under Alternative I; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Deschutes County Board of
Commissioners:
That the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners strongly recommends
that the Supervisor, Deschutes National Forest adopt Alternative I of the
Land Management Plan, Draft Environmental Impact Statement, as the basis
for future planning, management direction and resource utilization on the
Deschutes National Forest.
