Roadless Areas in )
Deschutes National Forest )
WHEREAS, the Deschutes National Forest is asking for public input
for determining which areas in the Deschutes National Forest should be
designated roadless and wilderness areas, and
WHEREAS, the roadless areas considered, constitute fourteen percent
of the Deschutes National Forest area, and
WHEREAS, the loss of this area would affect the sustained yield
and the allowable cut of the Deschutes National Forest, and
WHEREAS, the roadless designation is the first step to wilderness
area designation, and
WHEREAS, wilderness area cannot be managed even though the areas
could lend themselves to multiple use forest management, and
WHEREAS, forest management for multiple use areas of the Deschutes
National Forest would be, from the economic standpoint, more beneficial
to the taxpayers and residents of Deschutes County;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Deschutes County Board of
Commissioners go on record as recommending that the roadless area
designation be removed from all areas in the Deschutes National Forest
and that these areas be managed as multiple use areas.
