Decision )
WHEREAS, Forest Products are the number one employer in
Deschutes County and county roads are very dependent on forest
receipt monies as well as all public schools in the county
which benefit from the sale of timber on National Forest lands,
and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Forest Service cutting practice must
follow the Organic Act of 1896 which eliminates the clear
cutting method of timber harvesting and following the guide-
lines of the Monongahela Decision has reduced the timber sales
by 90% in the Monongahela National Forest, and
WHEREAS, Alaska has been ordered to halt a large sale
in the Tongass National Forest and if the court follows the
Eastern Court decision the effects will be brought to Oregon.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Deschutes County Board
of Commissioners support the suspension of the Monongahela
decisions effects until September 30, 1977 to give Congress
time to debate and adopt definite new legislation.
