Question:Should South Deschutes County
- residential properties be required to upgrade
wastewater treatment systems to reduce nitrogen
discharges in regional groundwater?
- Summary:On July 23,2008 the County adopted
Ordinance No.2008-012,the"Local Rule."A
- referendum petition was filed with the County Clerk.
Studies of groundwater in the south Deschutes
- County region have identified impacts,such as high
nitrate levels,from residential septic systems.
Regional groundwater,the drinking water source,is
shallow,compared with other parts of the County.
- Septic systems also discharge at shallow depths,
which pose health risks relating to contaminated
