Historically, tactical medics were hired as reserve deputies and covered under the County's workers' compensation program as an employee. To qualify as reserve deputies, prospective tactical medics had to successfully complete the reserve deputy academy. This involves 400 hours of specialized training over a period of several months. The Sheriff's Office currently has several trained medical professionals with certifications ranging from EMT Basic to M.D. that are interested in becoming tactical medics but do not wish to become reserve deputies. They have requested that they be covered under our workers' compensation program. This change would not result in an increase of exposure to the County's workers' compensation program since tactical medics have always been covered. Resolution No. 2017-048 would extend workers' compensation coverage to tactical medical volunteers starting November 1, 2017. This change was requested by the Sheriff's Office and is supported by Risk Management. FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.
