HomeMy WebLinkAboutPickett's IslandMarshall C. Awbrey, a Missourian by birth
and a veteran of the Mexican War, came
to Oregon in 1850 and to Central Oregon
in the late 1860s. At first, Awbrey was a
pioneer stockman in north east Crook
County. Around 1880, he moved to Bend
and seƩled on this island in the Deschutes
River, south of present day Tumalo. At
that Ɵme, the river flowed on both sides
of the island. Awbrey fenced a horse
pasture and built a small cabin on the
island. Today, there are no signs of
seƩlement immediately apparent.
Awbrey Falls on the Deschutes River and
Awbrey Heights in Bend are named aŌer
him.
