DATE: April 21, 2010 FROM: Tom Anderson, Director Community Development (CDD) 385-1704 TITLE OF AGENDA ITEM: Consideration of Approval and Signature of a Proclamation, declaring April 26, 2010 as "National Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist Day." PUBLIC HEARING ON THIS DATE? No. BACKGROUND AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS: This action coincides with Governor Ted Kulongowski's proclamation that April 26, 2010 be set aside by local governments to honor and recognize their Sanitarians/Environmental Health Specialists. FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None. RECOMMENDATION & ACTION REQUESTED: Approval and signature of Proclamation. ATTENDANCE: Tom Anderson, Director. Depending upon work schedules, several Sanitarians hope to be in attendance. DISTRIBUTION OF DOCUMENTS: One original for recording purposes and one original returned to: Kathleen at CDD to pick up, x 3193. Deschutes County PROCLAMATION National Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist Day Whereas: The Deschutes County Environmental Health Division's Mission Statement is to provide and promote protection of public health and the environment through education, consultation, and regulation; and Whereas: The citizens of the State of Oregon face potential health hazards every minute of every day of their lives that may result in deleterious effects to their health and/or their environment; and Whereas: Environmental health hazards are a great threat to the health and happiness of those persons who may be inmunocoprorised, the aged, and the young as well as to those who are healthy; and Whereas: Sanitarians/Environmental Health Specialists strive towards meeting preventive health goals for the public's health; specifically, to reduce or eliminate environmental health risk factors that cause human suffering, disease or injuries through consultation, education inspections, investigations and enforcement in the areas of food safety, public facilities, drinking water supply, sewage disposal, pest control, solid waste, air quality, toxics, bioterrorism, disaster response and communicable disease; and Whereas: Deschutes County's Environmental Health Division's staff of eight Registered Environmental Health Specialists strive each and every day to insure that the citizens of Deschutes County enjoy good health. Their objective is always to educate their customers on positive environmental health practices so that compliance is perceived as a benefit rather than simply rules to be followed; and Whereas: Governor Ted R. Kulongoski has proclaimed April 26, 2010 as National Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist Day and encourages all Oregonians to join in this observance. Now, Therefore We, the Board of Commissioners of Deschutes County, hereby proclaim April 26, 2010 to be National Sanitarian/Environmental Health Specialist Day and encourage all citizens to join in this observance.
