AGENDA REQUEST & STAFF REPORT
For Board Business Meeting of April 9, 2008
Please see directions for completing this document on the next page.
DATE: April 1, 2008
FROM: Rebecca Brown Sheriffs Office Civil Division 388-6640
TITLE OF AGENDA ITEM:
Consideration of Board Signature of Order No. 2008-029; An Order Declaring Certain Deschutes
County Personal Property Surplus and Authorizing Sale.
PUBLIC HEARING ON THIS DATE? No
BACKGROUND AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS:
In the past, the DC Sheriffs Office has held their own public auctions to sell off surplus property. DC
Code 2.37.110 sets out the methods the county can use to dispose of surplus property which include:
the use of public auctions. Holding our own auctions had a large fiscal impact on the Sheriffs Office
when taking into consideration the fees for auctioneers and the overtime paid for employees. Current
technology now allows us to utilize online auction websites which in this case is; publicsurplus.com.
This allows the SO to quickly auction off surplus property that would otherwise devalue and be
exposed to the elements as it sits around. Notice of the online auction shall be posted in the local
newspaper.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
The Sheriffs Office is charged a 7% surcharge by the website at the time of sale, but this is then passed
on to the purchaser.
