AGENDA REQUEST & STAFF REPORT
For Board Business Meeting of July 23, 2008
Please see directions for completing this document on the next page.
DATE: July 14, 2008
FROM: Rebecca Brown Sheriffs Office Civil Division 388-6640
TITLE OF AGENDA ITEM:
Consideration of Board Signature on Order No. 2008-071; An Order Declaring Certain Deschutes
County Personal Property Surplus and Authorizing Sale.
PUBLIC HEARING ON THIS DATE? No
BACKGROUND AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS:
In the past, the DC Sheriffs Office has held their own public auctions to sell off surplus property. DC
Code 2.37.110 sets out the methods the county can use to dispose of surplus property which include:s
the use of public auctions. Holding auctions had a large fiscal impact on the Sheriffs Office when
taking into consideration the fees for auctioneers and the overtime paid for employees. Current
technology allows the use of online auction websites, allowing the SO to quickly auction off surplus
property that would otherwise devalue and be exposed to the elements as it sits around. A Notice
informing the public that the Sheriffs Office will begin conducting online auctions of surplus property
through publicsurplus.com was posted in The Bulletin in June of 2008.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:
The Sheriffs Office is charged a 7% surcharge by the website at the time of sale, however, this is then
passed on to the purchaser.
