BEFORE THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
OF DESCHUTES COUNTY, OREGON
PROCLAMATION
A Proclamation Declaring
September National Preparedness Month
WHEREAS, disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year,
and each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property;
WHEREAS, investing in the preparedness of ourselves, our families,
businesses and communities can reduce fatalities and economic devastation in our
community;
WHEREAS, being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that
accompany disasters;
WHEREAS, every citizen in Deschutes County should be ready to be
self-sufficient for at least three days; this may mean providing for your own
shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation;
WHEREAS, communities, families, and individuals can educate
themselves to know what to do in the event of a fire, and where to seek
shelter when their home isn't safe or reachable. They should be ready to evacuate
their homes and take refuge in public shelters and know how to care for their
basic medical needs;
WHEREAS, people also can reduce the impact of disasters (flood
proofing, elevating a home or moving a home out of harm’s way, and securing
items that could shake loose in an earthquake) and sometimes avoid the danger
completely;
WHEREAS, for the month of September the entire Central Oregon
community can make disaster planning and gathering of supplies a priority in
their home and business; now
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County
Commissioners hereby proclaims September as National Preparedness Month,
and encourages all citizens and businesses to develop their own disaster plan.
DATED this Day of 2008 by the Deschutes County Board of
Commissioners.
