Subj: Approval of Les Schwab Giving Program Mini-Grant
The Shared Future Coalition was created under the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant issued to
Deschutes County Health Services by the Oregon Health Authority-Addictions and Mental Health Department. The goals
of the grant are to reduce underage and binge drinking among 18 to 25 year olds, and to build the sustainability of
prevention efforts for this age group.
The mission of the Shared Future Coalition is to engage the community to foster legal and safe alcohol use in Deschutes
County. In 2013, the Shared Future Coalition developed a strategic action plan which included the creation of a video
contest designed to empower 18 to 25 year olds to share positive messages about smart choices regarding alcohol use.
The contest is called, “Success Not Wasted”. This project contributes to the mission of the Shared Future Coalition by:
Engaging young adults in the creation of positive video messages which foster legal and safe alcohol use.
Raising awareness among young adults and other community members of positive young adult norms regarding
alcohol use.
The project was designed to be 100 percent sustainable through community sponsorship and donations by the third
year of implementation in January 2016. In 2014, the first year of implementation, just under 80 percent of non-staffing
project costs were contributed by the community. Staffing costs required in year one are anticipated to be significantly
less in years two and three due to the infrastructure development completed in year one.
This fall, the Shared Future Coalition would like to apply for a Les Schwab Giving Program mini-grant to help support the
media costs associated with advertising the video contest and invitation to the community to select the top five videos
by voting for their favorite videos. The Coalition is requesting $10,000.00.
Staff recommends the approval of this mini-grant application.
