Describe the organization including the history, mission, leadership structure and primary functions and activities (maximum 250 words). Mission/History: The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. In May 2011 the Red Cross joined with various other individuals, businesses, and community organizations to form Sisters Country: Prepared and Ready (SCPAR). This collaborative effort educates and promotes the readiness of those living in greater Sisters Country in the event of a major disaster. Leadership: SCPAR is led by volunteer representatives of the American Red Cross, the Sisters -Camp Sherman Fire Department, Sisters School District #6, Black Butte Ranch and the Sisters Nugget. In addition, SCPAR has the support and involvement of over 50 other interested individuals and groups including, homeowner associations, ODOT, the Pet Evacuation Team, Century Link, the United States Forest Service, local merchants and many others. Functions/Activities: In August 2011 SCPAR conducted a door-to-door preparedness awareness campaign. This was followed by an Emergency Preparedness Fair held on the Village Green in Sisters on September 17, 2011, attended by an estimated 500+ persons. Building on the success of this event, we are currently planning the 2012 Emergency Preparedness Fair. 3. Describe the program (project, activity or event) seeking grant funding. Include the specific individuals, communities or groups benefiting from this program (maximum 250 words). Preparedness Fair The first Sisters Country: Prepared and Ready (SCPAR) Emergency Preparedness Fair was held in September 2011. Approximately 500 people attended the event, which included 26 booths providing information about all aspects of individual preparedness, free Citizen CPR classes, lectures about the Cascadia Subduction Zone Fault earthquake and tsunami risk and the possible impact on those living in Central Oregon, wild fire and extreme cold disaster events, and a simulated Red Cross disaster shelter. Publicity included a website, 1 . , u .; a)rc [-=:1,,mcJr ark/ aru, newspaper articles and ads in the Sisters Nugget, radio promotions, posters and brochures in stores throughout Sisters and Camp Sherman, and displays in five participating local stores who offered discounts on disaster kit items. The 2012 Fair will build on the success of last year's fair by adding a component focusing on youth, arranging for blood donations at the Fair, and increasing the number of participant booths. In addition to the promotions/marketing done for last year's fair, SCPAR now has a Facebook page, and plans to add newspaper coverage in The Bulletin and hold preparedness classes in the Sisters' schools. With the added youth events, we anticipate that more families will attend the Fair; 2012 fair attendance is expected to be 750+. 4. Itemize the anticipated expenditures for the program. Also, provide a list of anticipated sources of funding and amounts projected. Table & Chair Rental for Booths $ 600 Posters (100 color) 100 Brochures (4,000) 850 Advertisement/Marketing 1,000 Sound System 100 Coordinator Stipend' Safety Tubes and Bags for Distribution to Fair Attendees2 2,800 Custodial fee for School Use 110 TOTAL $5,560 At this time we have been unable to identify any other potential sources of funding except for one Sisters' business ($250); we have made 5 other asks to date who have indicated they are supportive but don't have monies available. Additional requests are anticipated to be made but there is no assurance they will be successful. 1 SCPAR is exploring utilization of an intern or volunteer for this position, but if an intern or volunteer cannot be secured at no cost, the estimated cost would be $2,500-5,000. 2 Other preparedness items could be distributed at Fair if fund raising resulted in additional funds being available (personal first aid kits, whistles, small flashlights, and similar emergency type items.) 5. Explain how this program will positively impact the community's economic health (maximum 250 words). The 2012 Preparedness Fair will attract 750+ people to downtown Sisters, many of whom will be convinced to increase their own personal preparedness by buying items to stock their emergency kits from Sisters' area merchants. These items include, not only individual components for first aid kits, but also food, clothing, tools, car kit materials, and many other items. (See the attached "Kit Lists.") As SCPAR did in 2011, SCPAR will work with local merchants to offer discounts on kit components for several weeks surrounding the fair. Participating merchants in 2011 included: Ray's Food Place, Bi -Mart, Sisters Drug and Gift, Lutton's Ace Hardware and Hoyt's Hardware. Foot traffic and sales in these local stores benefitted as individuals were motivated to build their own individual emergency preparedness kits. 6. Identify the outcomes the organization seeks to achieve through this program (maximum 250 words). In the event of a major disaster, prepared individuals will not burden the city, fire departments, county agencies, FEMA, or other larger scale first responders so that they can focus on their broader objectives knowing that individual citizens will be able to survive for a significant period of time on their own. The 2012 SCPAR Fair will educate and encourage individuals to become prepared. The 2012 Fair will involve even greater numbers of Sisters Country residents in this effort, involve children, and engage the entire community in the critically important effort to become prepared. The 2012 Fair will encourage individual households to • assemble an emergency kit • prepare an emergency plan • get trained in CPR/First Aid Last year was a great start and the momentum needs to be maintained.
