The service would be administered on a county by county basis and needs would be sent out accordingly. -For the next twelve months we are looking to expand to the greater Deschutes County region. Currently the project only serves the Bend community and we feel the needs of the entire Deschutes County area would be well served by the expansion. • How can this effort benefit, extend or enhance services provided by Deschutes County departments? -The BeRemedy text line can enhance services available to clients of Deschutes County by providing those in need with access to resources that may not typically be met by county offices. The items typically requested through BeRemedy are ones that local agencies have not had the ability to provide. Through contact with Icon City, those items could potentially be provided to needy households in our community. Icon City sees the services provided to the most vulnerable in our community as being very collaborative. If a family has gone through tough times and has needs, we assist in meeting each of those needs. Many needs may go unmet and that is where the BeRemedy text line may be able to filt the gap. -For instance, the local Housing Authority (Housing Works) recently received a federal allocation of 25 housing vouchers for chronically homeless veterans. While the housing voucher assisted with a great need for many veterans in the community, there was still a missing piece. The households receiving the vouchers had just come out of homelessness and were moving into local housing with no household items (furniture, kitchen utensils, lighting, etc.). The Housing Authority, in collaboration with Central Oregon Veteran's Outreach and the Bend Community Center, set up a method for collecting the much needed items. Housing Works then contacted Icon City and requested assistance with getting the word out to the community on how folks could donate. Icon City sent out a BeRemedy request to assist with obtaining household items for formerly homeless veterans. Within four days of the Be Remedy text going out a modular building was filled with items the voucher holders could utilize. It is also worthy to mention that the household item drive had previously been covered by local news stations and received little response. The Be Remedy text campaign is what was able to get the community involved. As a FAN Advocate through the Family Access Network, I utilized ICON CITY'S BeRemedy Text Line on behalf of two of my clients. In both cases, the people behind the ICON CITY BeRemedy Text Line came through with the help these families needed. My first client was an elderly woman, with little to no income, who was in need of some plumbing repair work. Through ICON CITY'S BeRemedy Text Line, two plumbers offered their services to this woman and the repair work was completed. My second client was a local family who was gearing up to take in their toddler-aged nephew whose mother was going to prison. This family was part of the many struggling small-business owners in the area and they were in need of everything to take care ofthis child who was about to become part of their family. Once again, the people behind ICON CITY'S BeRemedy Text Line came through with an abundance of help including toddler furniture, toys, clothes and diapers. It was quite the blessing for this family. I truly believe ICON CITY'S BeRemedy Text Line is a blessing for our community. It allows people to "give" of their skills and abilities to help other people in need. It allows people in need to have access to an entire community's willingness to help by simply contacting one organization. I support ICON CITY'S BeRemedy Text Line. I urge you to do the same. You won't regret it. Please contact me if you would like to talk further about my experience with ICON CITY'S Be Remedy Text Line. Sincerely, ~~~-?~ Brenda C. OR "Veterans Helping Veterans" July 26, 2011 To: Deschutes County Grants Administrator Re: Letter of Support for Icon CityfBeRemedy Dear Sir or Madam: Central Oregon Veterans Outreach has worked with Icon City on several projects to assist those who are homeless or in need of services. Last summer when we had run out oftents, Icon City provided us with 10 tents that we used to provide to homeless veterans and others. Most recently we have worked with Icon City on a shower van project. We completely support efforts by Icon City for funding oftheir BeRemedy text campaign. Formerly homeless veterans are the direct beneficiaries of the BeRemedy text line. COVO recently worked with the V A to find housing for homeless veterans under the HUD-VASH voucher program. The veterans who got these vouchers had no furniture or household goods. Icon City used its text line to put the word out that COVO and Housing Works were looking for furniture and household goods items and thanks to the text line, we had a very good response, with donations of items the veterans needed. We strongly support Icon City's BeRemedy program and urge funding for the text line program. ct'~ Chuck Hemingwaf Executive Director feon-~1f,/{{jJJ~ Attn: Mr. Tim Bach July 26, 2011 !
