Re: Support of Bend Park and Recreation District's Bend Pine Nursery Appropriations
Project Request and Grant Application for Fiscal Year 2011
Dear Representative Walden,
On behalf of Deschutes County, we are forwarding you our endorsement of the Bend Pine
Nursery Park project appropriations request submitted by the Bend Metro Park and Recreation
Department (BMPRD). Deschutes County fully endorses this meritorious project and hopes that
the Federal Appropriations Committee will award the grant.
The Bend Pine Nursery Park project was authorized by the Bend Metro Park and Recreation
District Board of Directors in 2002. After two Acts of Congress, the 185 -acre site was acquired
from the U.S. Forest Service in 2004. The park master plan and design of Phase I improvements
were authorized in February 2006. Phase IA construction, which began in the District's fiscal
year 2007-08, is nearing completion.
Due to the dramatic economic slowdown experienced in the Bend area, the anticipated funding
to complete Phase 1A improvements needed by the community is no longer available. We
believe that the $7,168,3008 requested by the District for completion of the entire Phase I project
is worthy of FY 2011 appropriations funding.
Sincerely,
The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners
