Common Table Cafe
Common Table is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Bend Oregon. It is in
partnership with three local churches and other community nonprofits. It has a
board of directors made up of local citizens and community leaders. It purchased
the assets of the previous Cork Restaurant on Oregon Avenue in Bend, and
signed a three-year lease for the location, in late June 2010. It is undertaking
significant remodeling of the space and plans to open in late August or early
September.
This nonprofit cafe will locally source the majority of food and supplies, use
volunteers to staff part of the cafe, train local students in the food service
industry, train homeless and unemployed workers in the food service industry
and be a place for gathering to discuss issues that may exist in the community,
the county, the state, the country and the world. The food provided will be world
class and most patrons will pay for the food just like any other restaurant.
A unique voucher program will be developed to give to other nonprofits where
people in need can receive vouchers for meals at Common Table as needed or
they can work at food banks, community gardens, community improvement
projects, etc. This operation is intended to be self-sustaining through the
purchase of meals by paying customers.
Our unique and world changing idea is as follows.
We will be implementing a unique way to solve a major problem in our
community. Many people sit on street corners, near supermarkets, in doorways
downtown, and along highways asking for assistance, mostly for hunger needs of
their families. Most people are conflicted about how to respond. Their hearts go
out to these people who seem so desperate they must resort to begging. But
most are also reluctant to just give cash, since there is no way to control how this
money would be used. The Common Table will offer a better way to respond.
By making a donation to Common Table a caring person will receive the
equivalent value in tokens worth 10 dollars each that are good for a meal at the
Common Table Cafe. People can have these tokens in their car, in their purse or
in their pockets and can give them out to anyone asking for food money or other
support. These tokens can be redeemed only at the Common Table Cafe for
locally sourced healthy, high-quality meals. The Common Table is not a soup
kitchen, but a quality restaurant open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week.
It will have large common tables so that economically challenged individuals and
families will sit next to local politicians, local business people, local students and
average local residents. This intermixing of economic classes will be a unique gift
to the community.
We will use all contributions, which will be tax deductable, to expand the token
program by making more tokens available to the community through other
nonprofits that serve the needs of the unemployed, the homeless, the abused,
and the aging. We will also be able to purchase more local food and supplies
thus saving transportation costs and resources, reducing our carbon footprint and
helping people be healthier and better fed so they are able to work and think
more clearly. The Common Table token program will benefit Deschutes County
by offering a new unique idea that could spread to other cities in the county, and
make a significant dent in hunger and reduce the incidence of begging on the
corners, etc.
The county Discretionary Grant funds will be used to complete the remodeling of
the space at 150 NW Oregon Ave. We are using local contractors and paying
prevailing wages for all work. Some of the remodeling activities include removing
some interior walls, resurfacing the floors in the dining area, installing new
lighting, installing some new equipment like chillers and soda service units, and
purchasing and/or building new tables and chairs. It is anticipated that the total
remodeling cost will be between $20,000 and $25,000, with at least $4000 going
for ADA upgrades to the space, and be completed by the end of August. The
majority of these funds have been raised locally at an event held at the
Deschutes Brewery Mountain Room on June 14th. Additional funds of
approximately $10,000 are still needed to complete the entire renovation. We are
requesting a grant of $1,000 to $2,000 from each of the three commissioners to
cover part of this additional cost to get Common Table operational.
In addition to the remodeling funds raised, the initial operating funds for Common
Table are secured by a $50k line of credit. Long term funding for the leadership
staffing is supported by a three-year grant of $200k to pay salaries and expenses
of the staff.
After Common Table is open for business, minimal to no additional grant funds
will be needed. Ongoing operating costs will be covered by the food service
operations, and we anticipate giving 10 to 20% of our gross revenues back to the
community in the form of free meal vouchers.
