The objectives of the NSDAR are historic preservation, patriotism and education. Our motto is God, Home, and Country. We work to support our troops overseas and help those veterans who have become incapacitated with our donations to veterans' hospitals. Because we believe in historic preservation, we are actively recording the stories of our Bend area veterans for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. To date, our chapter has recorded, transcribed and submitted close to seventy-five veteran's stories. Since our founding, we have continuously supported our local and national DAR schools financially and materially with contributions such as books, flags, labels for education, cash and even a prom dress for a student at Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR. We encourage our young Americans from fifth grade through senior year to learn more about their history by annually sponsoring American History contests. In the past ten years to assist community services and historic preservation, our chapter has donated funds to the Boys and Girls Club of Central Oregon, the restoration of the Bend Tower Theater, the Ronald McDonald House, the Madras Veterans Memorial, the Bend Senior Center, and the Des Chutes Historical Society. We continue to supply some of the needs of Saving Grace, a Central Oregon not- for-profit family support organization. It is important to recognize others who have contributed to the improvement of their and our communities. In doing so, we annually give a DAR Good Citizen award to area outstanding high school seniors and the bronze DAR Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) medal to an outstanding Junior ROTC student in each high school that has a unit. To recognize and honor adults, we presented the DAR Community Service Award to Bob Slawson for his outstanding service to the Bend area community. Bend Chapter presented James Gunn with the NSDAR highest award, the DAR Medal of Honor, for his tireless work with veterans, especially the homeless. Bend Chapter has contributed to and participated in the Bend Heroes Memorial, the Memorial Day ceremonies, the Veteran's Day Parade, the Demobilization and Change of Command ceremonies for I Squadron 82nd Calvary 1 on its return from duty in Iraq and the World War II Veterans Historic Highway dedication June 6, 2010. Leadership structure of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is a National Board of Management which meets six times a year and is composed of the President General, eleven Executive Officers, 21 Vice Presidents General, and 53 State Regents. The Oregon State Society DAR is a similar organizational structure on a smaller scale and with 37 community chapters. Bend Chapter is composed of a regent (president), vice-regent, two secretaries, treasurer, chaplain, historian/librarian, and registrar who are subject to direction of the current 89 chapter members. Much of the work of the Bend Chapter is accomplished through its numerous committees such as the Nursing Scholarship Committee. Proposed project or activity Our most ambitious project in recent years has been the awarding of a scholarship to a second -year nursing student who has maintained a 3.0 grade point average at Central Oregon Community College (COCC). Each recipient has urgent financial need and has demonstrated significant academic and personal motivation. We have involved the Bend area community in our fundraising for this worthy cause. Beginning in 2004 Bend Chapter donated $500 to a recipient chosen by COCC Foundation. In 2008 Bend Chapter was able to increase the amount to $750 through fundraising activities. In 2009 Bend Chapter applied for a matching grant from State Farm Insurance. This enabled the Bend Chapter to award $1,500 to a student at COCC. Bend Chapter is holding a silent auction fundraising event on September 10, 2010, at St. Charles Medical Center to provide funds for the 2011 recipient of a Bend Chapter NSDAR Nursing Scholarship. Impact on the community's economic health Jim Weaver, Central Oregon Community College Foundation Executive Director, reported "...we had 889 applications and will be able to award 230 (with a further 90 given to students who renewed their scholarship). This means that the need is far greater than the scholarship dollars available, making the scholarship dollars received more vital than ever, given that they are awarded to students with great financial need and demonstrated promise." Each previous nursing student recipient has satisfactorily completed the Registered Nurse, Associate of Applied Science Program at COCC and is employed in the medical field. 2 Specific communities or groups who will benefit Bend Chapter recognizes the continuing shortage of qualified nurses in the United States. We feel strongly that serious students, who might not otherwise be able to afford nursing school, need financial assistance. Because education is one of the three missions of our NSDAR, Bend Chapter proposes to enhance its nursing scholarship program with a matching fund from Deschutes County Discretionary Grant Program. The objective is to assist a Central Oregon nursing student to graduate as a qualified Registered Nurse with an Associate of Applied Science degree, who'll serve in the local community. Expenditures Because Bend Chapter is an all -volunteer organization, all expenditures are limited to supplies and/or advertizing, which are dispersed from our fundraising activities. How grant funds will be used & future funding. One hundred percent of the requested amount of $750 will be added to $750 from the Bend Chapter's nursing scholarship fund and donated to the recipient chosen by the COCC Foundation. COCC administrative cost will be paid by Bend Chapter. The Bend Chapter Scholarship Fund balance as of June 1, 2010, was $4,827.24. This amount has been totally supplied by donations from chapter members or by fundraisers since 2004. Internal Revenue Service P. O.
