abused pregnant, parenting and adopting teens between the ages of 12 and 19 years old and their
babies. Grandma's House, now in our 18th year of serving the Central Oregon community, operates
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 day a year. We provide a safe, nurturing shelter in a stable,
supportive environment with access to comprehensive maternal and infant healthcare programs,
counseling, education, emotional and psychological support and early intervention. We provide
workshops and/or support in life -skills, substance abuse counseling, crisis intervention, pre & post-
natal care, breastfeeding, nutrition, parenting skills and child abuse prevention. The mission of
Grandma's House centers on achieving success in three major initiatives:

Jodi Hammack, Resident Coordinator (1.0 FTE)
Kathy Tabakman, Volunteer Coordinator (.50 FTE)
LeAnna Hash , Night Supervisor (.20 FTE)
Linda Collins, Bookkeeper (.20 FTE)
2. Proposed project or activity.
Funding from the proposed grant will be used to provide a portion of the financial support for
achieving the mission of Grandma's House's Volunteer Program. With our small staff, we must rely
heavily on our volunteer base who log over 6000 hours annually in their service to Grandma's House
Our Volunteer Program is run by a half-time Volunteer Coordinator staff member who provides
leadership, vision, organization and direction in building and maintaining an active volunteer program
for Grandma's House. Among the duties of the Volunteer Coordinator are:
• Field phone calls requesting volunteer information
• Schedule and provide tours, interviews and orientations for potential volunteers
• Coordinate with DHS volunteer coordinator to track background checks on all applicants
• Interface with volunteers regarding volunteer preferences, areas of expertise and scheduling
• Maintain updated files on active volunteers including volunteer roster, emails, etc.
• Correspond regularly with volunteers regarding Grandma's House updates and events
• Arrange and ensure 24 hour, including overnight, house supervision with volunteer coverage
around staff hours.
• Coordinate volunteer recognition activities
3. Timeline for completing the project or activity.
Volunteer Program to run for the duration of Grandma's House 2010-11 fiscal year from July 1, 2010
through June 30th, 2011
4. How the proposed project will impact the community's economic health.
It is widely recognized that prenatal health care, as well as a healthy and secure lifestyle, significantly
reduces the number of low birth weights and other medical complications which are typical to the
pregnant teen and an expensive burden to the medical system. Further, without supportive
counseling and education, teen mothers and their children are often destined to live lives of poverty,
neglect, and potential abuse. The goal of Grandma's House is to help each young woman become
self sufficient and able to make responsible decisions for herself and her child. This in turn enables
her to move on into independent living as a productive and confident community member.
5. Specific communities or groups that will benefit.
Besides the young mothers and babies who are residents of and being served directly by Grandma's
House, the Central Oregon community is served extensively through Grandma's Closet. Grandma's
Closet re -donates baby items, maternity & baby clothing, furniture, bedding & personal care items to
low income or no income families. In the last fiscal year over 580 unduplicated individuals were
referred to Grandma's Closet through 21 Community Referring Partners. Among those agencies
referring families in need to Grandma's Closet were:
• Bend High Teen Parent Program
• Bethlehem Inn
• Mountain Star Family Relief Nursery
• Bend Community Center
• Partners in Care
• Pregnancy Resource Center
• Cascade Youth & Family
• Healthy Families of the High Desert (formerly Ready, Set, Go)
• Child Protective Services Bend, Redmond, Sisters, LaPine, Madras & Warm Springs
