The Association is run by a five member board of directors. Our purpose is to provide low income families, singles and seniors in southern Deschutes County with a Christmas (holiday) food basket. (We do not ask for a person's religious affiliation.) We also assist S.C.O.O.T.R. (South Central Oregon Outreach Toy Run) in distributing gifts to the children of low income families. 2) We have applications for food baskets available at various locations in the community ( St Vincent De Paul (La Pine), the La Pine Soup Kitchen, La Pine Library, La Pine Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Human Services (La Pine) and business in La Pine). Applicants fill out the application and submit it. We process the application and coordinate with the Sunriver Food Share program, Gilchrist Christmas Baskets, Salvation Army (Bend) and local churches and social organizations to ensure that anyone requesting assistance receives it and that there are no duplication of services. 3) As of Tuesday October 5, 2010 our applications for food baskets are out and we are accepting applications for our 2010 program. We will be distributing the food baskets (and gifts) on Tuesday December 21, 2010. 4) The holiday season can be a stressful time for low income families, especially if they have children. By providing a food basket we may be able to help reduce this stress and perhaps help 'free up' a little family income to buy presents for the children. A second group that benefits is our volunteers. Last year we had over 100 volunteers help with our program. On distribution day about half of our volunteers are middle school and high students volunteering their time to help. Hopefully by volunteering when they are young, it will encourage them to volunteer for some worth while program when they become adults. 5) Our program targets low income families, singles and seniors. In our 2009 program, we gave out a total of 540 food baskets. These served approximately 1885 people (1017 adults, 739 children and 129 seniors). Break down of family size: 67 one person families (22 which were seniors), 111 two person families (87 which were one adult with children), 116 three person families, 101 four person families, 69 five person families, 52 six person families, 10 seven person families, 8 eight person families and 5 nine person families. Last year we anticipated giving out 600 food baskets, but the Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) (welfare) did not send out food applications to their clients (which they have done in the past). Therefore, we did not provide food baskets to an estimated 50 DHS client families that could probably have used a food basket. (Many people fill out both our application and the DHS application, but some people only fill out the DHS application.) 6) We buy turkeys, hams (5 pound hams which we give to singles or families that do not have the ability to cook a turkey (living in a small travel trailer or camper)), potatoes, milk and bread. We have canned food drives that provide vegetables and other canned goods. In the event that 4r we do not receive enough vegetables or other canned goods to fill the baskets, we may have to buy some canned goods. (This has not happened for years, but we never know what will be donated.) Beside the purchase of food, our only expenses are for Post Office box rent, fees to the State, rent on the building we use (this rent just covers the cost of the utilities) and liability insurance (we carry a 2 million dollar liability policy, certificate available upon request). All of our postage, printing, and other expenses are paid for by the volunteers. We will not have a good idea of how many applications we will receive until around December 1, 2010. Therefore, we will not know how much food we will need to buy until around this time. We also will not know the price of the turkeys and hams until after Thanksgiving. I am anticipating (using a worse case scenario) that we will spend $10,000 for turkeys, $2,500 for hams, $600 for potatoes, $1,200 for milk and $500 for bread.
