The Cat Rescue Adoption and Foster Team receives, retrieves, traps and processes cats and kittens that are declared abandoned or otherwise given up by their owner. These animals receive spay and neuter service, veterinarian services for sickness and injury, shelter, food, litter and adoption services. In 2008, CRAFT cared for 588 animals. Thus far in 2009, 450 animals have been provided services. Many of the animals are from the Humane Societies and other shelters that experience overcrowding. Project Name: Care and adoption of cats and kittens Project Description: These grant funds will be used for ongoing support of organizational activities including care and adoption of cats and kittens. Project Period: Ongoing Amount of Request: $1,500 Previous Grants: None August 20, 2009 Deschutes County Commissioners 1300 NW Wall St. Bend, OR. 97701-1960 Honorable Commissioners, On behalf of the CRAFT (Cat Rescue, Adoption and Foster Team) of Central Oregon, I would like to thank you for your consideration and support. Our organization is involved with the care, feeding, medical support, spay and neutering services and adoption efforts relating to abandoned kittens and cats in Central Oregon. We process hundreds of these poor animals annually working with humane societies, pet stores, veterinarians, and local news outlets to care for and find appropriate homes. The efforts of CRAFT have been acknowledged and praised by various private and public agencies and organizations including Deschutes and Redmond Humane Societies as well as the Bulletin Newspaper. With this acknowledgement, however, comes the added exposure and the related increase in demand for services. In 2008, our organization cared for 588 kittens and cats, providing care and adoption services. Finding decent, loving homes for each of our "guests" is the ultimate goal of CRAFT. Thus far in 2009, more than 450 of these unfortunate animals have come under our care and responsibility. It is not inexpensive to feed, provide litter, provide medical attention including a spay and neuter program and to advertise or set up cat -adoption sights. The money used to provide those services to this point has come almost exclusively from volunteer donors who also commit their time to assist in the care of these animals. CRAFT would be most grateful for fmancial support of the Deschutes County Commissioners in the amount of $1.500 to assist in the provision of services and the continuance of this important service to the citizens of Central Oregon. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me at the numbers and email address listed below. Thank you again for your consideration and commitment to quality of life for our citizens and our pets. Applicant organization: A. CRAFT (Cat Rescue, Adoption and Foster Team) is a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization. B. The mission of CRAFT is to: "Rescue, provide care and ultimately placing in appropriate homes the communities' homeless, abused, neglected and otherwise forgotten cats and kittens while promoting responsible pet guardianship and the human/animal bond". C. The leadership of CRAFT is structured on a Board of Directors and an Executive Director. The Board is made up of 6 volunteer citizens of Central Oregon who share an interest in the well-being of needy animals. The Executive Director and founder of CRAFT is also the primary non -paid staff person who provides shelter, food and other considerations for the animals. D. Activities: CRAFT receives, retrieves, traps and processes cats and kittens that are declared abandoned or otherwise given up by former owners. These animals receive spay and neuter service, veterinarian service for sickness and injury, shelter, food, litter and adoption services. 2. The proposed activity: Since its beginning, CRAFT has provided all of the services and support listed in D above. It represents our on-going program of care and adoption of cats and kittens. 3. Timeline: CRAFT operates a fiscal year from January to December. However, the programs are continuous and have no start or stop dates. The goal is always to expand services while maintaining the highest possible levels of quality in our care and placements. 4. Community's Economic Health: CRAFT receives its cats and kittens from throughout the Central Oregon area. In 2008, we cared for 588 animals while thus far in 2009 we have hosted 450. The fact is that more and more of these animals are being abandoned when rents and mortgages cannot be paid; people lose their jobs or become ill or move away. The cost to the community that results from feral cats, non -spayed or neutered animals and general health concerns mounts steadily along with the unwanted population. CRAFT provides a source of income for Veterinarians, pet food stores, publications, groomers, etc. Once an animal is placed in a new and loving home, the economy continues to benefit from the continued care of these pets. Many of the animals (118 in 2008) came from Humane Societies and other shelters that experience over -crowding and drains on their already challenged budgets. Craft not only provides a necessary and useful service to the community, but also most effectively utilizes its limited funds in a most disciplined and fruitful way. 5. Specific communities and groups that will benefit: In 2008 and 2009 more than 1,000 cats and kittens have come to and been processed by CRAFT. These animals come from places such as Central Oregon Humane Society, Redmond Humane Society and citizens and agencies in Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Eagle Crest, La Pine, Crescent, Gilchrist, Powell Butte, Sunriver, Terrebonne, Crooked River Ranch, Christmas Valley and Burns. All of these communities and agencies have benefited from the existence and programs of CRAFT. 6. Based on figures from 2008 and a population of 588 cats and kittens, the following expenditures were incurred: Veterinarian and medical costs — $22,962.10. Food (dry and canned) - $3,467.76. Kitty litter - $4,046.34(50 Pounds a day!) for a total of $30,476.20. All revenue to this date has come from donations from the Board Members and the general public. In the future, the Board has made decisions regarding pro -active revenue generation through increased public awareness, benefit events and grant writing. INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE P. O.
