Economic Development Grant Application

1. The Redmond 2J Educational Foundation was established in 1998 to enhance the
efforts and goals of the Redmond School District by providing the best education
possible for each student and acquiring resources through community
involvement and support. It is guided by a volunteer board of 10 members. Its
primary fundraising activities have been seven annual Christmas concerts and five
golf tournaments, and an extended campaign to raise funds for new band
instruments. The foundation has awarded nearly $300,000 to all schools in the
Redmond system to provide enrichment programs not in the school district's
budget. The emphasis this year is on literacy.
2. The Best of the Trail Band is a concert, which itself is an educational endeavor
because of the nature and variety of musical instruments included in the
performance. The Trail Band was created in 1991 at the request of the Oregon
Trail Council. Presentations at the concert will represent music of the Lewis and
Clark and Oregon Trail eras and the Ghosts of Celilo.
3. The concert is scheduled the evening of Saturday, October 25, at Redmond High
School. It replaces the annual Christmas concert. Last year the concert was a sell
out and netted more than $5,000. Those funds are distributed throughout the year
to applicants deemed worthy by the foundation's grants committee.
(Revenues were down about $3,000 from previous years, because the Deschutes County
Grant was down further to $1,000. In 2006 the county granted us $1,500; previously you
had granted us $5, 000 and we made you a naming sponsor.)
4. There is no better cornerstone for improving the economic well being of a
community than a well educated constituency. Part of that education is self
reliance and independence, teaching students to be responsible, employable
citizens less reliant on public assistance programs.
5. Our funding impacts all grade levels in the Redmond School District.
6. Anticipated expenditures. We are attaching a copy of the income and revenue
history from the 2007 Christmas with the Trail Band concert, and the latest annual
report of expenditures of the Redmond 2J Educational Foundation.
