The La Pine Frontier Days Association was formed in 1998 for the purpose of organizing and pro-
ducing the La Pine Frontier Days 4th of July Celebration. This is an event that has grown from a
community gathering in 1976, to become the single largest economic boon to the South Deschutes
County area; attracting thousands of out of the area visitors. The event is always at least three days,
and coincides with the La Pine Rodeo. The Frontier Days Association is proud to say we have been
able to help other organizations in our community by offering free booth space for their fundraising,
as well as paying them to help with certain aspects of the event such as clean-up. We are truly a
community organization. We have expanded to include other events such as The La Pine October
Fest and Newberry Explosion Chili Cook -Off. This event features booths from all area non -profits
that wish to participate, as well as live entertainment and of course great chili.
This event was initially conceived of to bring attention to the new permanent stage we constructed
in 2007 at the La Pine Park & Recreation District facility known as the White School Park Com-
plex; the home for many years of La Pine Frontier Days. For many years we erected a temporary
stage for our 4th of July Celebration, and when it came time to rebuild the old stage we decided the
money would be better spent to build a permanent one on the park grounds; something the commu-
nity and the park district could use all year long. We could envision concerts and events that could
benefit the park district in it's ongoing financial struggles, plus it would be one less thing for the
Frontier Days volunteers to have to worry about; and it would be a far superior construction than the
temporary stage.
The funds for construction of this stage came from the Frontier Days Association along with the
help of sponsors and donated labor. In total we spent $7,800 to construct this great addition to the
community and to La Pine Park & Rec. Add that to the approximately $10,000 in donated labor and
we have given to the community and to La Pine Park & Rec a structure worth close to $20,000. In
fact the Deschutes County Community Development showed the value of this as over $27,000. In
order to make this happen, our local branch of Community First Bank gave us a short-term loan in
the amount of $6,500 to help with the cause. We made the first payment last year of approx.
$2,000, and will owe a similar payment this year, 2010 & 2011.
This grant request is for the balance of the amount owed on our loan with Community
First Bank; approximately $5,500 if paid off in full by September, 2009. By paying this
amount now, we would be saving close to $800 in interest.
We have found, like so many non -profits this year, that the severe economic situation has drastically
cut our sponsorship dollars. These contributions are the life -blood of our organization and our event
cannot sustain itself without them. We very carefully spent the funds we did have and made several
cut-backs this year in how our event was presented. We currently have the money to make our loan
payment, but it would severely limit our funds to organize next years event. And next year is the
100th Anniversary of the official naming of La Pine, and with any luck we will be looking at having
at least a portion of our event at the new "La Pine Events Center"!
